If anyone's wondering what Bruce Campbell (Autolycus) and Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle) have been up to since Xena went off the air... they're over on the SciFi Channel in a "humans rebel against alien invaders" movie that is so insanely godawful that it puts Battlefield Earth to shame. Someone must have fell asleep while watching Planet of the Apes and woke up in the middle of Braveheart to come up with the script for Alien Apocalypse. The premise is lifted straight from them both. Astronauts on a deep space mission return to Earth to find the planet has been conquered by aliens. One of them then tries to rally the people and lead a rebellion. Unfortunately, the only stirring battle in this two-hour made-for-tv waste of time is the lameness of the visual effects competing against that of the dialog. Bruce Campbell doesn't even make a convincing Taylor, yet alone a good William Wallace. Renee O'Connor's only purpose seemed to be to hang off his side when they were together, and be the off-screen damsel he needs to rescue when they were apart. After watching her kick ass with a long stick as her only weapon for so many seasons alongside Lucy Lawless, I was bored to tears watching her here. Yet, indeed, I watched to the end because it was one of those movies that was JUST THAT BAD. Tags: review, television Current Mood: grumpy
