Haven't had much time for LJ-posting. I'm in full convention prep mode now from the moment I get home from work at the end of each day until the moment I crawl into bed at OMG o'clock AM. The A/C has been broken in the building where I work for a full week now. There's a pretty decent breeze to be had most days on the 10th floor if you can manage to get one of the nearly 100-year old windows open. Yesterday, however, was intolerable... just hot and humid and no relief to be found. I'm glad we haven't seen many days like that in the high 80s or anywhere into the 90s. Today, however, is awesome. I don't even have to run a fan. Yes indeed... I'm much more productive at 69 degrees than I am at 96. It also finally hit me yesterday that shortly after I get back from The Gathering of the Gargoyles, it'll be Labor Day and "summer" as a state of mind will be pretty much over for another year. I've been plodding along feeling like it's not even begun because the con hasn't happened yet, and last night suddenly I'm hearing "Back to School Sale!" on the TV. Next year, with The Gathering as it existed over, I'll have to find something else to plan my summer vacation around. There's gotta be a way to hang out with my friends without having to invest countless unpaid hours of drudge work for several months ahead of time. :P Tags: gathering of the gargoyles, vacation, weather

I typed up a nice long LJ post this morning, hit the button, and LJ ate it, coughed up an error message, and then gave me nothin' when I hit the back button. So this is some abbreviated randomness... Big thunderstorm that hadn't been in the forecast woke me up early this morning. Temperatures reached close to 90 today. Supposed to be 70s and 80s through the weekend, too, then go back to the 60s for next wek. Last weekend it was in the 40s and 50s. WTF seasons? I'm officially addicted to ATCs and y2hecate , karine , and mangagirl have been my enablers. Between the trading cards and a few other pieces, I'm pretty sure I've commissioned more stuff in the past month than all of last year. I could sit on YouTube and watch Pablo Francisco videos all night. The man is hilarious. If good fences make good neighbors, I should be getting along with mine better soon because they just put up 6' privacy fence around their entire back yard. Unfortunately, they're still opening the side door to let the dog out to do his business... and his favorite spot is still my side yard. So I want to get another 15' of fence to close the gap. I have a new screen door on order to replace the one ravaged by the windstorm a while back. After downloading the instructions and reading about all the things I'd have to cut and drill just right to avoid making a call to their "oops" part replacement number, I decided to have Home Depot install it. And in other goings on... the planning for The Gathering of the Gargoyles continues. We've got one more week left before the pre-registration price goes up, so I hope a few more people take advantage of it and register early. Monday was the only day of the con where I needed the alarm clock to wake me up. We didn't have the boardroom that we'd been using as the con suite on Monday, so we didn't have food waiting for us, either. Susan was off taking Keith to a quick voiceover recording job, so it was me, Jen, Greg B., Nikki, and Karine in search of breakfast. We opted for the hotel restaurant, where the service was a bit on the slow side but the food turned out to be awesome. I had a terrific breakfast burrito that included beans and guacamole, but everything everyone else ordered looked great, too. From the sushi on Thursday night to the banquet on Sunday to breakfast on Monday, the hotel's food was really good even if sometimes the wait staff seemed completely overwhelmed by large groups of people. The con schedule for Monday had only a couple panels, and after the first one was over I relocated the Registration desk into the meeting room so we'd be ready to take pre-reg for next year before too many people had to start vanishing for the airport. As the last panel before Closing Ceremonies, Jen, Karine, Mara, and eye-patch wearing writer Edmund discussed Blue Mug Productions and showed off some of the preliminary character designs for the comic they are working on. It's going to be awesome and I totally want to be be member number 00001 in the "Founder's O" when the get their pay site up and running. ;) At the Closing Ceremonies, I announced the Music Video Contest awards. Afterwards, I helped take pre-reg for 2009 and ran around a bit to help get the con's stuff cleared out of the Art Show and Dealer's Room. Before long, sadly, it was time to say a lot of good-byes. The big group that had arrived together on Thursday was also leaving together, with the exception of Greg Weisman, who was staying over one more night before heading on to Minneapolis for another convention (two cons in a week - the man is a masochist), and with the addition of Karine, who'd changed her return flight in order to attend Monday's con events. So there were lots of hugs exchanged in front of the hotel as cars were loaded. As usual, it felt like the weekend had gone by way too fast. I miss all my friends already, and I can't wait for next year's con so I can see them all again. With everyone else headed off to the airport or starting their long drives home, Susan drove me and Greg Weisman back to her place to hang out for a bit. After her husband Rob returned from dropping off people at the airport, we all went for an early dinner at a big seafood place that can seat so many people when they're really busy that the area for waiting was roped off and had arrows painted on the ground like you were getting on a roller coaster. But wow, I've never seen shrimp that big before... or ever been fed so well over the course of a convention weekend as I was during this year's trip. After dinner, Rob took me and Greg back to the hotel, where we helped him load up the Art Show boards. I said goodbye to Greg outside my hotel room door, then spent a few hours packing so I could be up early on Tuesday morning to head home. With my mad ninja tetris packing skills, I managed to reduce 12 file boxes of unclaimed registration packets, t-shirts, and office supplies down to only 8. Then I watched a little T.V., set the alarm for 5:30 am, and got some much needed sleep. On Tuesday, I woke before the alarm went off and was checked out, loaded up, and reading to go by 6:15 am. Once again, major kudos to the hotel for being quick and helpful with the bringing of a cart for all the boxes and fetching my car from parking before I'd made it downstairs. I made a quick stop just up the street at Burger King for a coffee, one more stop en route to the freeway to fill up the gas tank, and then I was on my way home. My plan was to be ahead of the morning rush hour, and it succeeded. After getting through the construction on I-94, traffic was moving at speed through downtown Chicago and the rest of the drive was uneventful highway cruising under clear sunny skies. Six and a half hours later, I pulled into my driveway, and thus ended my Gathering of the Gargoyles summer vacation. Tags: gathering of the gargoyles
